I agree with the other Jason, she teaches each student according to his/her needs, not just the same thing for everyone. I've been doing a little Caruso, but not a lot by any means. The Caruso excersizes and pretty simple, but having Laurie tell you when and how to do them and what the point of each one is (and what the poinT ISN'T!) helps a lot!

As for what I bring into lessons, the reason I came to her was to solve a mechanical problem that I've had no success solving. I've used the approach of "music first" for a long time, but it wasn't working in this case, so I needed to try something different. Right now (for me) it's not about phrasing or expression such things, it's about training the chops to respond, without worrying about how is sounds.

Jason's exactly right about her "three stages," frist you can't, then you can and it sucks, then you sound good. It's the same process we all went through as beginners, it wasn't until later that we worry about how good or bad we sound and then think about too much and screw ourselves all up! I'm still in the midst of "suck" for some things! It's strangely liberating...

When I studied with Laurie, we worked on Caruso and more. I did a lot of lip bend study patterns, lip flexibility exercises, and then Flexus was added. This was almost four years ago. Before I had a lesson with her, I had seen her at an ITG Conference and then tried to figure out the rules to Caruso later and really did not figure it out until my lessons with Laurie.
