| Mezzo Forte User | Re: Tuning Issue I exprienced something similar when recording a demo with my band. Both earplugs in: playing flat (or sharp). So next time, I only put one earplug in. Or I'm gonna try using a personal monitor system.

![]() | Re: Tuning Issue it's an interesting phenomenon. Our flute player is now playing with the headphone off one ear and it hasn't stopped her playing sharp. I don't think she is hearing enough of herself in the mix. There are quite a few pasasges where she is playing in unison with me and they sound bad if I don't sharpen up to her pitch. What they sound like front of house could be a different story. I think you need both ears hearing your own sound well to play in tune. It would be interesting to experiment, can you tune up with one ear only, or does your brain need to compare the input from two ears to do the job? If you were playing with two headphones on and a really decent level of foldback of your own sound, greater than what you hear ambiently, I think you could play in tune without any problem. |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Tuning Issue When playing with headphones (like I do most of the time), I usually have one on one ear, the other open. Seems to work pretty well, but I probably have more control of the mix I'm hearing than you do. We have little personal mixers that I can turn up or down anyone in the band, it is pretty nice.

![]() ![]() ![]() | Re: Tuning Issue Dave Monette has a nifty trick where we hold a tuning fork to one ear and then the other. Often the fork is sharper (or flatter) in one ear than the other. Weird. I'm just glad I can play loud enough to be in tune all the time!
