For at least 30-35 years Ollie Mitchell was THE Studio Trumpet Player in L.A. His father, Harold Mitchell, had been the leading player in his day and had come up through vaudville from the 30's. Pappy Mitchell wrote a very comprehensive series on trumpet playing called, "Mitchell On Trumpet." Great practice routines in the style of St. Jacome, but very progressive. Each of four volumes increases in range and difficulty with the fourth book up to high G. Very difficult workouts! Ollie was a fantastic player, a never miss Lead player. Nailed everything the first take, and was the first call on recording dates in Hollywood. Often the only call, doing all parts himself. Tight section. He and Chuck Findley were close. Retired to the big island and does a small big band thing called the "Olliephonics." Even though he's well into his seventies, he still plays as well as ever. I heard Pappy play when he was in his 70's, popping off Double whatever you want and saying, "Just giving Bud a run for his money (Bud Brisbois)."

Jack Kanstul was a student of his, maybe Jack will add to this.
