Hi all,

For those of you that don't recognize the name Johnny Bello - he happended to play lead trumpet for Judy Garland ( you know, Liza's mom ) for roughly 20 years and is playing fantastic lead trpt in her famous " Live at Carnegie Hall " comeback concert "

I happened to buy his Calicchio from him when he retired from his work in New York and Los Angeles and moved to Florida ( 1s/7 - circa 1969 - silver ) and he told me that he and the other trumpet player actually traded every 2 BARS on Judy's outgoing overture which of course happened to be " Over the Rainbow ".

He told me she took it so extremely slow , it was all they could do to get thru the 2 bars at the full volume they had to play it at. He said ' it felt like your 2 bars lasted a life time and the other guys was never long enough "

Anyway I've know of 2 player credited with the Bob Newhart theme, both names should be known by all, but I'd like to see some other forum members take a try - for you younger guys and gals , the show was on in the late 70's (Yeah, ancient history time. ) and it had a beautiful trumpet solo in it.

The actual player was Buddy Childers who joined the Stan Kenton band when he was 19 and his mother actually traveled with the band to keep an eye on her son.

No, it was not Jackie Vernon. ( if you know who he is, you are old )

Larry

Hey, TM this trumpet trivia stuff is fun - how bought a trumpet trivia section. Maybe MPM could moderate it.
