DaveH is an unknown quantity at this point
I've been a huge Herb Alpert and the TJB fan since about 1965...I'm 52, by the way. I still listen to this music and seem to never tire of it...it had a powerful influence on me as a trumpet player/performer and in some other ways as well...

I have all the recordings from LONELY BULL through WARM - either on vinyl or CD, depends - those are the first eleven TJB recordings - I also have a couple of the compilation or greatest hits collections - again some on vinyl or CD, depends. These recordings contain songs that were recorded at the time of the original TJB(although the touring group that is pictured on many of the album covers is not necessarily what you hear on the recordings). I have an early compilation set by the Longines Symphonette Society that covers the first four TJB albums and a Baja Marimba Band compilation thrown in that set for good measure...these are all vinyl.

I also have CONEY ISLAND and YOU SMILE-THE SONG BEGINS from the second edition of the TJB - both on vinyl.

Then, there are the many solo albums that Herb has done. I don't have them all, but I have several of them, some on vinyl - some on CD...depends.

My favorite solo project by Herb Alpert is FANDANGO, followed by PASSION DANCE.

As you probably know, Herb Alpert played a Chicago Benge during much of his recording career. He also has played Marcinkiewicz, and more recently, Kanstul. I have heard that his favorite horn is the Chicago Benge.

I believe that Herb has had a profound impact on music, both in a business capacity as co-owner of A&M Records and as a major influence on popularizing instrumental music in general and the trumpet in particular.

I love to hear Herb play a melody - love the tone quality and stylings, phrasing, etc.

I also no longer have a turntable, and have been trying to decide what to do about that for a while now...every so often, there are rumors that the TJB albums will eventually be all reissued on CD, or at least, a good box set type collection. I'm waiting to see what eventually happens in that regard. The DEFINITIVE HITS CD isn't anywhere near what this entire spectrum of many hugely popular recordings over a 40 year career deserves.
