I’ve just been sitting here listening to Arturo Sandoval’s “Trumpet Evolution”. Simply amazing stuff. You might not enjoy ALL of the tracks but some of them are simply “to die for”. My favorites are “At the Jazz Band Ball”…Biederbecke (you have to hear that bari sax thumping away); “La Virgen de la Macarena”….Mendez (ok..this one probably wasn’t much of a stretch for Arturo…it’s still great); “Concerto for Cootie”; “Manteca”, Gillespie; “TeePee Time”, Clark Terry; “Round Midnight”, Davis (I would have called this one “Three AM Blues”); “Joy Spring”, Clifford Brown; “Later”, Marsallis.

Heck, it would be easier to list the tracks I didn’t like!

If I had to do the “desert island” routine I think this is the CD I’d take because it represents so many different artistic styles, and done by a master at his trade. Highly recommended as “#1 Listening” for someone who wants to build a jazz trumpet collection and hasn’t decided which genre or artist they want yet. There are some awfully good sidemen on this CD as well.
