You brought back found memories for me when you mentioned Danny Stiles in one of your lists! After Watrous left for the west coast Danny would put together a big band once a month, or so, to play various gigs in Rockland County, NY, which is where he was living at the time. Since he always fronted the band he would call me to play the lead book. I can't tell you how much I learned from Danny...not only through conversations, but by simply listening to him when he played! I would usually show up to the gig with either a different piece or horn...or both...and he would "bust my chops" about it all night!! He NEVER switched his equipment! He played a lacquered lightweight 72 bell Bach and a Giardinelli 7M piece...that's it!!! He could play ANYTHING on that combination...from the prettiest ballad to over-the top lead with screaming double C's. I really miss him!
