I believe it would be interesting to note that Maurice Murphy started his playing with his local Salvation Army Band.....his father was a member. MM then entered the UK brass band movement and became All Britain Junior Champion cornet soloist in 1947. He eventually became principal cornet of the world famous Black Dyke Mills Band (now called Black Dyke)...a friend of mine's claim to fame is that he shared the solo cornet chair with MM when they played in the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain in the 50's.
