Re: cornets and combo jazz

Kenny Wheeler played one in the original Dave Holland Quintet for a bit (and I think with Anthony Braxton's quartet, but I'm not sure of that). Also if you can find recordings with John McLeod from Toronto check it out. He plays Cornet and Flugelhorn,...only plays trumpet when it's needed in a section.

David Braid Sextet live "Vivid" is a great one featuring John McLeod. It won a Juno two years ago, McLeod sounds really happening.

I actually mix my own sound first, including a slight "sweetening" of digital effects on my mixer. Then, one output from the mixer goes to the house mix via a balanced mic cable. In effect, the house mix receives my mic signal as if it went straight to the house mixer.
Really ? Lucky you! I've never played in a venue large enough (over 1000 seats) that the sound folks would give the trumpets mics!

I study arranging with John, and have studied trumpet with him a while ago. He is one of my favorite players and arrangers.

The largest two were an open air concert at Union Park in NYC, and the other a 13,000 seat venue in Central Florida, both times with the sound run via professional sound contractors who knew what they were doing with the "house mix."

In both cases too, this allowed me to have a stark contrast between the bright and powerful trumpet and the sweet, gentle, human-like sound of the cornet playing as gentle as a whisper and then amplified to the proper balance level.

Talk about a really cool contrast in one's tonal sound palette! Naturally, one approaches their sound concept on each instrument separately and for many of us it takes a while not to subconsciously "force" the cornet to sound like a trumpet.

Actually, close-micing of the short cornet via a modern sound system and a modern jazz or commercial sound project offers one a truly fresh and compelling sound not avaliable to the original masters of the cornet!

Try it . . . you'll love it.

I'm especially sure that Ingrid would enjoy the texture too with the kind of feel and style she has.

Hey Ingrid, let us know when you get a chance to check out those new sounds via a short cornet and a deeeeeeep-V mouthpiece!

Sincerely,

Tom Turner

Tom,

Your comments were very informative and sort of a news to me. I think that it is very interesting...And I am very curious aobut. It is too bad that Bulgaria is so far from where you are normally playing. Would be possible for you to post couple of tunes on the cornet, so I can get more precise idea? Is not necessarily that this has to be studio recording. You can also record a part any gig so we can admire it a bit...
I'll see what I can do. It will probably take me a couple of days, maybe longer to get it together.

T.

PS: Ingrid, I'm not trying to hog this thread . . . just replying to the original poster after he PM'ed me requesting me to post on this thread.

Though I asked Tom for a sound preview I would not mind anyone using the cornet to change tonal colour (as oposed to only trumpet or only cornet for all) to post sound clips. If Ingrid can show give us a preview of how she uses the cornet, I will be more than happy. I hope that I am expressing here the opinion of most TM members who are taking part in this thread...

Whenever I saw Kenny with Braxton, which was often around 1975, 1976, he was always playing an old bach Strad. He was very accomodating always, showed me the charts, talked about how ridiculously hard they were, etc. The one time I saw him with Holland he played trumpet too, but I only saw him with that band once.
