I promised you a sound clip in a few days, but I've had some things come up this weekend (unexpected guests) that will prevent me from making a recording this weekend. So, I'm attaching a short clip of Warren Vache playing cornet. I promise to get you some stuff just as soon as I can come up for air. Enjoy . . . Amazon.com T. | |

| Mezzo Forte User | Re: cornets and combo jazz Interesting post. I play my beloved Besson 8-10 cornet with deep Al Hirt 7c in a 9 pc swing band here in Kalamazoo, called the cabtown checkers. Lots of fun, non pro, but we do fun gigs at various functions around the area. Our pianist, Jack Bradke, originally from Chicago, does the arranging. The mellow cornet sound blends well in this group which includes: piano, bass, drums, clarinet, flute, tenor and alto saxes, trombone and me. I hadn't played cornet since 1960, when I went to college and dad bought me a Selmer K-modified. (wish I still had it) Dave 84 Bach Strad trumpet 55? ![]() | Re: cornets and combo jazz Don't forget that Freddie Hubbard played cornet on Herbie Hancock's "Emperian Isles" (one of the greatest albums from that period I think). Here is a quote of him talking about it from an interview: I’ve been playing the flugelhorn about four years, and now I can play it better than the trumpet, because it’s much easier to play. But I had a little old cornet, made back in about nineteen–twenty–something—a short, stubby instrument; one like Louis used to play, with the round back. It had a beautiful, real mellow sound; it was in between a cornet and a trumpet so small that I could do a lot of things on it that I couldn’t do on the trumpet. I used it on an album with Herbie Hancock and when I heard the playback, I said: “Wow—did I do all those things?” It was almost like I had complete control of this little horn. It wasn’t like the cornet they play today; it was much fatter in the back. The entire interview can be read at: Freddie Hubbard 2 |

![]() | Re: cornets and combo jazz Hi, I'm new to the forum. I am taking up the horn after a 20 year lay off. I'm looking for a good cornet and I'm a bit frustrated by the fact that dealers don't keep them in stock. Do you all have a recommendation? I loved Nat Adderley's playing and also that of Bobby Hacket. Also, Art Farmer, though he was a trumpet/flugel player. But it's that kind of subtle sound. Thanks! |

Hey, I resemble that remark !!!!! What were we talking about ??? (Just kidding too ! ) As Ingrid said, THAT sax player doesn't know what he's talking about. As a sax man myself, I only have 7 cornets, to my 4 trumpets. So you know how this Sax player feels about cornets. There's something sweet and sensual about a cornet that I find irresistable !
