getting lost in the form

Between transcribing jazz solos and studing scales I find it very hard to play the changes without getting lost in anything more coplicated that than a 12 bar blues, how can I better learn to hear the changes so as to negotiate a more compatent solo?.

How are your Piano chops? If you can get around it, bang out the chords so that you can hear the progression and have a better understanding of the Harmonic progression. Analysis of the chord progression is also a desirable endeavor, see what the common tones are and begin to connect the dots sort of speak. Practice the guide tones (3rd & 7th) of each chord as well as the arpeggios. Play the root of each chord, then the 3rd, 5th, 7th in whole notes per measure than half notes, quarter notes and once you feel comfortable with that begin playing them in 8th notes each measure. Check out vocalists interpreting the song you are working on, it is important to know the lyric of the song for an overall comprehension. And most importantly, listen to as many great players as possible.........
You will be fine, just be patient, persistent and oh yea, have fun!

Memorize the melodies to all the great standards. Play along with cd's. Phrase the melodies in your own way. Write or work out solos ahead of time. Take jazz lessons with a guitar or piano player. All of these things have helped me!

Put your metronome on two and four and play quarter notes on chord tones. After doing that 200 times through the form you won't get lost anymore.

All of the above AND-
1.record yourself (with the metronome) and play the bass notes or bass lines that fit the chords.(play along with bass players-8va or whatever octave that needs to move)
2. Record the changes (maybe slower than needed) on piano or guitar ..or band in the box of one of those programs...
3. Practice the tune in different keys, different meters
4. Do what Mike says but I would add, your understanding of time will increase if you put the metronome on a variety of beats. 1 and 3, just 1, just 4, hear the beat as the AND of 1 and 3, etc....
