Re: hearing intervals prior to playing

I would like to second what Ingrid says about the Walter White CD. (Long tone accomp.) I have that CD & its great for experimenting with melodies, intervals, getting centered on pitches, improv. practice, "releasing your soul", whatever.

Re: hearing intervals prior to playing

Major 6: Take the A Train
Minor 3: First interval in the blues scale (that's actually how I first remembered how to identify the interval!)

The very first one I ever learned (I am surprised nobody pointed this one out)

Minor 2nd: Theme from "Jaws"

Re: hearing intervals prior to playing

A couple more...

Quote:
minor 3rd = Night Train / Happy-Go-Lucky Special
Perfect 5th = It Ain't Necessarily So
minor 6th = NOT the NBC Jingle
Major 6th = The NBC Jingle
If you can sing a major and minor triad, you shouldn't need a mnemonic for major or minor 3rd or perfect 5th.

Also, these are for ascending intervals. You also need to work on descending intervals!

Re: hearing intervals prior to playing

I gotta say this:
The interval = tune idea is not adequate in my opinion.

The intervals sound different (they have a different quality) based on where in the chord they are. So a fourth is not just a fourth.

Take a major chord:
There is a difference between the intervals Fifth up to Tonic and Tonic up to Fourth - both are 5 semitones intervals, but they do not sound the same at all

'When I fall in Love' starts this way:Fifth-up to-Tonic-up to-Fourth. (The fourth is actually the #5 of the next chord if you wanna be pedantic, but the argument still stands: A fourth and a fourth is not necessarily the same thing)

So memorizing a fourth by remembering "Prince of Denmark" (starts with fifth up to tonic) wont help you if you're hovering on the tonic and you want the sound the fourth to be your next color.

There is a cool application here: The Home Page of Alain Benbassat that helps you recognize notes based on their place in the scale. This is much more worth the effort in my opinion.

Just my 2 kopeks

Have you ever taught students in this area?

Re: hearing intervals prior to playing

I do a lot of work with vocalists. This requires more than moderate facility in multi-accidental keys. Working on the White CD is a help
as is playing standards in "odd" keys. Your ear REALLY gets a workout as you tend to "rely" on it "differently."
