| Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer Clifford's sound just floated on air. Sounded so effortless. I too don't like those questions, who's the most, etc. But I've been listening to Art Farmer a lot lately and he sure played beautifully. I like it when people play slow. Miles. | Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer This is tough because I think people tend to have different conceptions on "what is Lyrical"..... I heard mention of the Blue Train solo-When They go to the double time feel-HE STILL mantains that lyrical beauty!! Miles had a great concept of building a solo-through melodic ideas-NO matter what era he was playing from. Chet baker was pretty lyrical... But the guy who for me combines all of the above players--Blue Mitchell!!!! |

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer I think that Art Farmer is one of the most unappreciated trumpeters of his era. His lyricism is astonding. Wherever he is in the form he always plays just the right note. Not to say that he plays what you expect to hear because he frequently suprises. I love his ballads because it's hard to tell where the statement of the tune ends and his improvisation begins. Now, I DIG MILES. A lot. But Art Farmer has always knocked me out. BTW the first album of his that I ever heard was "The Jazztet and John Lewis." It's hard to find (though I think its been reissued on CD) but its worth the purchase price. T. Mac

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer Although I don't like the word "most" or "best" in comparing, I'll agree with Art Farmer being extremely lyrical. I am in the process of transcribing his solo of Lush Life from 'To Duke with Love'...WOW! I just love it. As far as underrated, I'll throw in Nat Adderly- love his stuff too! -Andrew

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer I second Sweets Edison. I started listening to lots of Sinatra's capitol albums about ten years ago to learn tunes, and Sweets will just put in the perfect fill. His solos will be about four measures, or even four beats. In particular, there's a great string quartet, sweets, and Sinatra album--Close to You, In the Wee Small Hours, Songs for Swingin Lovers. I also think Dizzy is an underrated ballad player. Of course he's a great everything player.

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer I'd like to add Mike Metheny to this list. He's totally "lyrical" on flugel, cornet AND the EVI. He deserves much more recognition, and I tip my hat to him!
