Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

If we count all Jazzers and not just trumpet players, then I'd like to submit Lester Young as a very lyrical player.

Very good point! I'll also throw in Harold Land on tenor...love his stuff with Clifford Brown.

I guess it's the inner English lit student in me that wants to hear more critique (not to be confused with criticism) when it comes to describing players and music, much as they do in the British way, in which the language used can almost make you taste, smell and feel the event, eliminating the possibility of just a one or two word description.
This is an eternally unfolding answer situation we are in here now, but I think it's great to see names that I have yet to load into my crazy-full ipod world to once again discover and enjoy.

This is great stuff. Reminds me of an older player I know who played the best melodies. Nothing fancy harmonically, just a joy to listen to. It was always a mystery to me to hear other players cut him down because of his lack of harmonic adventure, then hear them play a solo with all kinds of altered sounds and no discernable melody. The players who put it all together, horzontally and vertically, intellectually and emotionally, just blow me away.

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

Thank you Trumpet Brethren running wild in cyberspace!
A lot of great responses as I had anticipated. I do want to get one thing straighten out in response to the "I do not like the most, the best, etc, etc," replies. It was not and is not my intention to start any cyber snippiness. I personally do not feel comfortable with the "Who's Best?" forums either! Looking back.....poor choice of verbiage on my part!
My intention was/is who moves you, or who can you relate to, etc. There are SO MANY great players to be inspired by......... Blah, Blah, Woof, Woof!
Peace
Some other cats that make me :
Miles, Sweets, Enrico Rava, Hannibal, KD. Too many to list actually, it depends on my mood!

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

me too Billy B!
I heard one of those players last night- Amir ElSaffar, the Iraqi trumpet-player who won the Cauruso competition a few years back. A must for all to check out as he has learned and studied some of the oldest music ever and has translated it to trumpet. He sings beautifully as well, and has some of NYs finest, SWINGING players backing him up so the the music is free to roam where the spirit leads. Although the music is metrically involved, (sometimes a challenge for the more traditional ear) Amir, being a beautiful spirit and great musician, has really found a way to bring peace and intensity to the band-stand, along with a real cohesive vision that reaches across the room.Might I add, he also plays the trumpet extremely well!!!
by the way,
I've been following alone with everyone's input here. FAN-tastic!I'm sending all of my students here to check in on what's up!
Back to the shed, gigging tonight in the Village with one of my favorite bands- Agrazing Maze. Storm or no storm!
Man it's wet out there....
Peace,
ingrid
PS- look for some new cuts on my Bootleg radio on my site as we will record tonights gig at the Stone.

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

One of the things this thread made me realize is that the Jazz musicians we love are always lyrical, in the sense that their improvisations are never just technical displays, but attempts, at a variety of tempos, at making up new melodies. If we keep that goal when we improvise, will always have something to say when we play. in the right hands, a barrage of sixtenth notes is a beautiful melody, and in the wrong, just a bad version of the Clarke book.

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

Thanks Mike, I am aware that Amir is from Chicago ( I was one of the judges when he won the Caruso competition) but his family is Iraqi which is, I believe, one of the reasons he chose to study there and absorb the music that he is now adapting into a fresh new language of his own. At one point in the gig I was certain that Don Cherry's spirit had entered the room as Amir and Rudresh went off on an amazing conversation journey...I have to say it inspired our gig tonight and yay,we had a full room of great listeners at the Stone, a VERY cool listening room in the east village. Ok- off to the taxes, stay dry~ Ingrid

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

When I hear "lyrical," there are two people who immediately come to mind: Clifford Brown and John Swana.
