Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

Just as I was going to type Thad Jones, I read Ingrid’s response. This lyricism is what I strive for when I pick up the trumpet and the old Martin Imperial flugelhorn. What has kept me listening to jazz is this “lyricism.” I’ve been listening to Art Farmer so much (played a transcribed solo of his from memory), Thad Jones (love his solos from his big band and play along with them), and Kenny Dorham (love his ballads on Quiet Kenny). Art just happens to be my personal favorite. I also like Warren Vache on cornet and Jeremy Pelt on flugelhorn. Joe Magnarelli (Mags) comes to mind when John Swana is mentioned. I love CT on Porgy and Bess.

When Ingrid plays the flugelhorn, I just love it, in small group or with a big band. She can make the technical sound so lyrical on the trumpet. By the way, I will hear and see you perform tomorrow night, Ingrid!

Great thread!

Janell

He sings beautifully as well, and has some of NYs finest, SWINGING players backing him up so the the music is free to roam where the spirit leads. Although the music is metrically involved, (sometimes a challenge for the more traditional ear) Amir, being a beautiful spirit and great musician, has really found a way to bring peace and intensity to the band-stand, along with a real cohesive vision that reaches across the room.Might I add, he also plays the trumpet extremely well!!!

I've been following alone with everyone's input here. FAN-tastic!I'm sending all of my students here to check in on what's up!
Back to the shed, gigging tonight in the Village with one of my favorite bands- Agrazing Maze. Storm or no storm!
Man it's wet out there....

PS- look for some new cuts on my Bootleg radio on my site as we will record tonights gig at the Stone.
Ingrid,
Where can we hear Amir? Does he have a website? Does he get a chance to perform in NYC? I hope so.

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

I really love the stuff that Don Fagerquest has done - he plays so easily, sounds like he's sittin in a rocker! We can't over look Cliffords favorite player - Fats Navarro

Ruby Braff did a series of duet albums with the great pianist Ellis Larkins that contain some of the easiest, most natural playing I've ever heard.

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

I had the opportunity to hear Ingrid perform last night at the 55 Bar. Her playing was phenomenal! I loved her “Ninety One” solo on the flugelhorn from her “Here on Earth” recording. It was totally lyrical!
