Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

Nahhh, Other than Brownie and Kenny Dorham, the best are-Ron Stout and Claudio Roditi. No BS and meaningless high runs; just pure inventive melody!!!!

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

I really like Don Fagerquist, but there is one person I haven't seen anyone mention. When I was living in Los Angeles in the 1980s, there was no one who could come close to playing as lyrical and melodic as Warren Luening. Even among the pros, he was known as "Mr. Taste".

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

I’d say Ralph Alessi is a fine example of one of the contemporary jazz trumpet players who has a fine lyrical quality to his sound. I’ve been fortunate to hear him perform at the 55 Bar and look forward to hearing him play some more.

Good point.. Mike is a great player and you don't hear his name enough! If you have never heard the album Blue JAy Sessions-you are really missing out!

Re: Most Lyrical Jazzer

I love so many players, but for lyrical playing, check out Freddie on "Dear John"...The guy blows such melodic stuff over giant step changes...it's sick!!!!

don't forget KD...His Turnarounds were always some of the hippest and most lyrical of any trumpeter.
