I firmly believe in the benefit of transcription...listening (over and over!) and imitating. It is a language, right? You have to know what
you want to say before you say it.

Re: Tips for Improvisation?

per·mute vt
1. to change the order of items in a group, especially to rearrange them in every possible way
2. to reorder the elements in a mathematical set

It's a fancy way of saying invert or inversions...
135 513 315 153 triads!
1357 7153 5173 etc ( maj 7, min 7 dom 7, dim 7, aug 7)
1235 5123 2153 etc
there are many...have fun!

Re: Tips for Improvisation?

Learning a laguage is an excellant analogy! Start to speak slowly.
When first experimenting; my high school band director advised to first observe the key signature, you'll hear the chords. Later ... While playing in Rock Bands that changing from Major to Minor---Dom. to Maj.When listening to Bird and Dizzy ...... I hear any note any scale. as long as you end on the right note. And what makes it right? What note comes after that, or after that. Don't feel too bond by "changes" (chords) Transition to the next one is just part of the conversation or statement.

Re: Tips for Improvisation?

So when you say change phrases and stuff does that mean like playing it backwards or changing the octave of certain notes in the phrase?

Your statement thinks me of a jazz standard that probably we all love...here is the text:

One Note Samba

This is just a little samba
Built upon a single note
Other notes are bound to follow
But the root is still that note

Now this new note is the consequence of the one we've just been through
As I'm bound to be the unavoidable consequence of you

There's so many people who can talk and talk and talk
and just say nothing or nearly nothing
I have used up all the scale I know and at the end I've come
to nothing or nearly nothing

So I come back to my first note as I must come back to you
I will pour into that one note all the love I feel for you
Any one who wants the whole show dó-ré-mi-fá-sol-lá-ti-dó
He will find himself with no show better play the note you know

or if you prefer the sinatra singin' it... YouTube - Frank SINATRA - One Note Samba (Samba De Uma Nota So) myself I prefer Al Jarreau but could not find his version on the net

Re: Tips for Improvisation?

record yourself playing along with play along cd's abersol or just the tunes them selves over top of the solos, then transcripe your own solo. if you hear you went from an idea and it didnt work, try to work out what that idea was. but of course the more you listen the more idea you will have. by listening i mean listen to everything. listen to how the drums interact with the soloist first, then bass and drums, bass and soloist etc. when someone talks to you in a soft tone you will natural reply softly. it is the same in music.

Re: Tips for Improvisation?

CDs are good, but none listen to you, Aebersold or Coltrane are the same that way. But if you listen to trios and quartets and follow the solos from the sax, to the horn, to the piano, and even to the drums, you will hear melodic and rhythmic elements shared and passed around from one to the other. Often one solo is begun with the last few notes of the preceding one. Listening is very important to developing your Improv ability, and if you can, put on headphones and find time to really concentrate on what is being played. You can repeat listening until you catch on, and sometimes it takes patience and determination to become an effective listener.

With standards, like Aebersold, and other "established" material, you should be able to play the melody by memory. If you memorize the melodies, you should be able to just start a track and know from the changes what the song is - although sometimes there is a lot of similarity between songs. The melody is the best basis for an improv. Play with them, changing a note or phrase here and there, and you will start to grok how improv works.

In my opinion you absolutely need to know the melody by heart (and the lyrics too) if you are to become a decent improviser.

Re: Tips for Improvisation?

Do you find that depending on the instrument, the solos don't sound the same?

What I mean by that is a saxophonist won't improv the same as a trumpet or a trombone or...

I guess some combinaisons are easier to play on each instrument.

Other thoughts? :)
