| Re: Transcriptions! Try searching on itunes, or type the artist and discography in a search engine. Listen to the midi files the website has included. It does everything for you except oil your valves! |

| Re: Transcriptions! Again I feel as if I'm a dissenting voice here. I looked at Roy Eldridge's Rockin' Chair transcription, certainly one of the all time great trumpet solos. I found it riddled with inaccuracies, missing a tremendous amount of detail that I would consider essential. Don't trust anyone else's transcriptions. The only way you get any value out of them is if you do them yourself. Even if it's a solo that's famous. Do it yourself. Five Charlie Parker solos you learn yourself is much more valuable than 100 you learn out of a book and if the book is the Omnibook none of those are worthwhile. | Re: Transcriptions! Agreed Mike, the only reason I add the line about checking with a (hopefully) correct version is that I remember a number of light-bulb moments when I was about to give up on a solo I was learning. If the book is right, and you happen to be lifting the solo from the wrong beat, or just NOT hearing the idea that you have repeated over and over, it can give you the boost needed to actually finish the solo. Kind of like cheating a bit on a crossword puzzle- you sneak a peak at the final draft and the one word you just couldn't get opens up the whole puzzle and again (a very important point) you can finish the puzzle and move on. The amazing slow downer is a good tool as well. Speakin of slowing down, I'm wiped after yesterday- Night all... |

| Re: Transcriptions! When I was working on transcribing a solo from my brief trumpet studies with John McNeil, he gave me some wisdom. If you cannot get a couple of measures and feel stuck, you can always go back and fill it in later. That way you feel like you are moving ahead and forward if you can fill in some other parts of the solo or crossword puzzle. You will eventually find the missing links or pieces to complete it. |
