| Re: who to start listening to... I asked Laurie Frink in a lesson with her years ago who I should be listening to and she replied with Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, and Kenny Dorham. Now that I live in Brooklyn, I go to local gigs and hear Ingrid, John McNeil, and others perform. Janell |

| New Friend | Re: who to start listening to... EVERYONE!!!! Miles for sure, Louis Armstrong, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, CHET BAKER, BLUE MITCHELL, Kenny Dorham, Lester Young, Ingrid Jensen, Dave Douglas, Roy Hargrove, Clark Terry, Clifford Brown, Claudio Roditi, Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Michael Brecker, Woody Shaw, Fats Navarro, Tiger Okoshi, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Ornette Coleman, Joe Gilman, Dexter Gordon, Buddy Rich, Gary Burton, Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Lester Bowie, Roy Eldridge, King Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke, and Count Basie just to name a few. And then, go through any other musical genres you might like. I get ideas from many places outside the jazz world including country, pop, rock, metal, indie, classical, etc. You can never have too many things to listen to or be inspired by. Best of luck to you and enjoy! |

| Re: who to start listening to... Here is a link to Pat Harbison’s “Jazz Trumpet Listening Material” from his website: Pat Harbison - Conspiracy Theory, Jazz from Bloomington, grading improv, Indiana jazz trumpet, Indiana University music I used his list and combined it with John McNeil’s discography list at the end of his book, “The Art of Jazz Trumpet” to find out who to listen to. | Re: who to start listening to... No one has mentioned Bobby Hackett,Tom Harrell or Warren Vache or Doc Cheatam. So many great players to learn from. Hear them all and especially to the real swingers. I have found that many plyers have great chops, plenty of technique and know all the licks. But, many don't have anything to say and can't swing. Listen to tenor players like Zoot Sims or Lester Young and hear how they swing. Remember:'It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing' is a message to keep in mind. |
