Re: Woody Shaw!

Hi Ingrid!
I too am a big fan of yours! Heard you with the Maria Schneider Orchestra a few years ago @ "Zinnos" (sp) Impressive playing from you and the group, Maria is such a great writer! As far the last great innovator on the Trumpet, who is a big influence for many of us Mr. Woody Shaw: I always dug his sound, and his harmonic sense and intervallic playing simply put, blows me away. I was fortunate to hear Woody live on numerous occasions front row, and his virtuosity was amazing! Particular recordings that inspire me are United, Stepping Stones, and Lotus Flower. !My .02 for what it's worth. This is a great clip of Woody with Johnny Griffin:

Re: Woody Shaw!

Off to itunes....
:)
Big Woody fan of course- the first album I got was WoodyIII. It was too heavy for my ears at the time but as I learned more and listened to more music (not just jazz) I fell deeply in love with both his tunes and his incredible voice on the trumpet.
Never actually transcribed any Woody solos (maybe half a chorus on Green Dolphin Street?..) as I really didn't want to end up copping Woody licks but rather, wanted to play compositionally in the way he did. I definitely played along with the tunes (and lifted and arranged many of them) and solos and learned a ton!

Thank YOU for the link, it's a wonderful interview. I love Woody Shaw, the best jazz trumpet player of the last 30 years. Like Ingrid, I never really copied any of his stuff, just a couple things (and I do use a couple little gestures) but he was to me the last great stylist. His stuff is HARD. Very un-trumpet like, more like saxophone lines. My first real recording of his was Stepping Stones, totally blew me away. Woody III is way up there as is Rosewood. I like how he writes, too. I spent many a night at the Jazz Showcase mesmerized by Woody's great artistry.

Re: Woody Shaw!

For anyone interested:

There is a re-issue of a live Joe Henderson, "at the Lighthouse," from 1970 that features some pretty intense Woody Shaw playing.
