Obviously, the previous respondents to this post did not answer the question that was posted. I have wondered about this, also. I suspect the previous owners did the lacquer-removal -- this was quite "the thing" to do a while back (probably still is, to some extent...), and is in the interest of "opening up" the response and smoothing the tone.
Don't think it was an option from the factory.... (I've been wrong before).
