GordonH has a spectacular aura about
someone take an old cavalry trumpet and cast it in a block of concrete so only the bell rim and receiver are clear of the concrete.
This would dampen all vibration of the metal and we could see how it played. it might answer some of these questions finally.

A cavalry trumpet is like a bugle but usually in the key of Eb and long like a natural trumpet.
