| Yes, most of the 1/2 combinations are quite sharp. It drives me nuts when people play middle A, first line E, high A, middle C# on the C trumpet.
Third valve is your next line of defense when it's inconvenient to use your slide/trigger. The slide gives you more fine tuning capability, that's why it's preferable but 3rd is great.
