| Derek received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Arizona in 1988. For the past 16 years he has worked for Honeywell Engines Systems & Services as a Reliability and System Safety Engineer supporting both main aircraft engines and auxiliary power units.
As a musician, Derek is currently the 3rd trumpet with the Mesa Symphony (1992 – Present) and Principal trumpet with the Tempe Wind Ensemble (1990 – Present with the last 3 years as Principal). He was a member of the Gabrieli Brass Quintet from 1989 – 1998, played Principal trumpet with the Mesa Community College Orchestra for the 1991 – 1992 season, 2nd Trumpet with the Phoenix College Orchestra from 1990 – 1992, and was 2nd Trumpet with the Mostly Mozart Orchestra in 1991. Derek played several services as an extra trumpet with the Phoenix Symphony Orchestra in 1991 and 1992.
Derek is a member of the International Trumpet Guild (ITG) and is a recipient of the Sudler Silver Scroll Award from the John Philip Sousa Foundation for participation with the Tempe Symphonic Wind Ensemble (2003).
He is a current student of Benny Nguyen (Phoenix Symphony). He has studied the orchestral literature in private lessons with Benny Nguyen, Jim Benitez, Richard Peters, and Neal Woolworth, and had individual lessons with Charles Schlueter (Boston), Ramon Parcells (Detroit), and Russell DeVuyst (Montreal).
He and his Wife Michelle live in Tempe and have three boys.
