I believe in using the same equipment for everything. I have the music going in my head before it comes out of the bell. I sing a lot. Try singing a legit piece.....now scat "Conformation" with the proper bebop inflections. You will find it easier and easier to switch gears if there is a sound picture in your head.
Be open to all kinds of music......I even find country music appealing
