I've known Maynard for many years by this point and that sounds very out of character for him. I've never heard of behavior from him like that towards fans and admirers. I'm not doubting what you heard but i have to question context and perception. The "I've won four grammies" comment sounds particularly suspect. Let me tell you a story:

When Will Scarlett left the CSO it was reported that I went to the audition (false, no interest whatsoever), didn't get into that finals and pitched a fit screaming "That's my chair, that's my chair!" It has also been reported by MANY people by this point that Wynton and I used to duke it out over part assignments at Eastern Music Festival. Wynton is four years younger than I am and we were never at EMF together. He started going the year after I left. I never even heard of him until I got my first pro orchestra gig in Seattle.

I mention those two incidents ony to point out that people's memories about things can be shady, at best, sometimes. I have always known Maynard to be a gentleman to his fans and very secure about his station in jazz history.
