In searching for an email address (for Allen Vizzutti), I stumbled over some old email. One was from the late Ted McIrvine. Here is part of what Ted said:
Quote:
I studied trumpet with Ed for several years shortly after I joined the
faculty at College of Staten Island/CUNY. (1986-88 if I recall correctly)
....
But I vividly remember his answer to why he so intensely dislikes
mouthpiece buzzing because I asked him that myself. His answer (and
indeed his whole approach to trumpet playing and teaching) was that
trumpet playing requires one to fill the entire horn and project the
sound and air through a large hall in as relaxed fashion as humanly
possible. He felt that mouthpiece buzzing called for one to project
sound only a few inches and therefore was psychologically bad.

Ed, could you perhaps say a bit more about this topic?
Ole
P.S.
Btw, I think Allen Vizzutti is a proponent of the same thinking:
Quote:
Three words have led more brass players astray than any other common misconception.....
The three little words are: "Buzz your lips."
