Trumpetmike, I'm not so sure on that one? I keep hearing contrary claims on that one, ask your friend Mr Denis Wick, he would know for sure.

Sorry to go off subject.

For the record I don't think Maurice Murphy would call anyone wimps, he's a "use whatever you like" type of gentleman whose attention is far more on the music than the equipment, (from what people tell me and from the few times I've met him).

The C is popular round the world, but I wouldn't say it's as dominant as all people may think. Russia, UK, parts of Italy, and some Orchestras in Germany use the Bb as their main instrument.

It seems to me that more countries and Orchestras are becoming more open minded and flexible. Now with the availability of the internet CD's, and different conductors flaying across 2 continents in 2 days, people have much more access to the variety of Orchestral styles and set ups. One could argue everythings becoming the same?

One trend that seems to occur, is many sections will use the Bb for Shostakovitch, Prokofiev, and lots of the Russian Repertoire. Switching tC's for Ravel (as Mr Laureano stated for the French Music).

Sorry for the long post. I do have a question for Manny Laureano:

Which approach do you think is most effective:

Sticking to one instrument as much as is technically and musically possible; becoming completely at home, secure and "at one" with the instrument. Possibly making certain passages a bit riskier etc...

Or

Switching instruments frequently using which plays in the best key making it safer (hopefully) for the player.

I realise there is a huge grey area in this question and it is by no means a black or white answer. I've tried both approaches, and the quest is never ending! I'd love to hear your take on it.
