Mahler 5 opening

I've been working on some popular orchestral excerpts, and I'm having some problems with the low F at the end of the 'introduction' to the first movment.

I don't think the range down there is an issue because I end my warmup everyday with a 3 octive F scale begining on that low F. And I can play it fine when it comes up in the first movment of the Hummel Concerto. But its just not speaking clearly when I play it here.

What do you think the best way to practice this and get it clear? I've been working on lip slurs in the low register alot to help make the connection from the Bb to F smoother but it dosn't seem to help. When I slur down to the F it gets fuzzy and very hollow sounding.

Thanks
