Funny that you mention Phenix City (Spelled without the O). In the 1930's-50's, it would have put downtown Detroit to shame. It was run by some pretty powerful guys who regularly had the soldiers from Columbus robbed and beaten up, or killed, in the brothels. There was also a town wide lottery system. Illegal liquour, etc. Eventually, it got so bad that the National Guard was called in the town was put under martial law. This was after the assassination of state attorney general-elect Albert Patterson on the streets of Phenix City. There's a pretty good book about it called
