A bit more technical...

Try looking for the book "Acoustical Foundations of Music" by Backus. It might be a bit tough to locate, but it has some great technical info on barsses without resorting to a lot of math oriented discussion.

Also, check out Tom Rossing's book,"The Science of Sound." Rossing cites Backus.

Also books by Arthur Benade might be of some help.

FWIIW coming from me, I love the Backus book. I use it in my physics classes as a resource when we do our acoustics unit.

You may not be looking for that much techno stuff, bu in additon to teh Arbans book, you ought to have plenty.
