Have a terrific birthday, amigo!

In Alabama are you now legally allowed to start giving your dad grief about getting your learners permit? My son who is your age started behind the wheel stuff last week after 10 hours of written test preparation.

Geez, it was just yesterday I was holding his hand and teaching him to look both ways when crossing the street. That just reminded me of something bitterwsweet, I'll share with you, Screamer:

I don't remember how old my boy was but as I stated, I used to hold his hand when we'd cross a busy street and his hand would instinctively reach for mine when we'd get to the curb. One day he did so as usual and I looked at him and realized "My G-d, he's X years old, he needs to not do that anymore." So, in one of the toughest moments of my parental life I gently pushed his hand away without saying a word. I gotta tell you it ate me up because it represented only one of the many times that I know is part of the process of pushing him gently out of the nest.

Right now there are a dozen or so fathers that are reading this and tearing up as I am because they've gone through it or are going through it. Don't get me wrong, my young friend. We go through it because we love our children and just know that's the way life is.

So, my birthday wish for you? A day where you enjoy yourself and continue to look forward to each day that follows. You may, at some point, wish to say to your dad or mom "What's your favorite thing about being a dad/mom?" You may be surprised by what you hear, maybe not.

Feliz cumpleaņo!

ML
