Use a small Exacto knive from a hobby store and go very slow! The problem with so much of the cork you find today is that it is not high quality stuff. It craccks and flakes too easily resulting in a short lifespan for the corks. Because the old Conns use so much cork, I'd rather send the horn off to Bob Reeves or Charlie Melk and have the artificial material put in. That way, I don't have to worry about disintegration, moisture or compression.
