Luciano Pavarotti tells the story that when he was studying at La Scala, practicing scales, arpeggios, arias, excerpts, more scales and arpeggios he became, at length, sick of it and began to wonder when he could stop and call himself a singer.
He was going up the stairs to the rehearsal halls one day when he spotted the greatest Italian tenor of the day coming down. After they greeted each other, Pavarotti said earnestly, "Maestro -- tell me -- when did you stop practicing?"
The famous tenor looked at his watch.
"About five minutes ago." he said.
