Rules are rules. A society needs rules so that it can operate in a lawful fashion. Throughout your life you will run into rules, some logical, some apparently illogical, and some just plain "stupid". But they ARE rules and the sooner you get used to that idea the better.

I agree that it's a bit like removing all the cutlery from aircraft meals... a ballpoint pen or a plastic knife can be just as dangerous as a metal fork or a steakknife (OK.. so nobody serves steak on aircraft). It was a senseless and poorly-thought out rule... but it was a RULE at the time. Get over it and move on; eventually it'll be corrected.

What's wrong with cargo (tactical?) pants (well, maybe except for those pants in which the "cargo" appears to be all carried below the belt and in behind) when, as someone else pointed out, you need a backpack loaded down with 40 lb of books and mp3 players and who-knows-what-else to survive your "day at school"? Senseless..... but it's a rule.

I tell my kids... "Maybe you disagree with the teacher... but just remember who it is that evaluates your classwork and assigns your test marks and will be in the position of power over you... never forget that." They don't like it (heck, neither did I when I was their age), but at least they've been given something to chew over.

The more dense a population is, the more rules there need to be obeyed: witness some of the "laws" in places like Singapore and Japan, etc. There are expectations of "acceptable behaviour" in any society; even within organized crime "societies". Woe betide the person who breaks those rules. (bring up the soundtrack from The Godfather).

I'm absolutely WITH those who would put restrictions on the "cute sayings" that are to be found on some T-shirts & hats. And for Heaven's sake... TAKE YOUR STUPID BASEBALL CAP OFF WHEN INSIDE A BUILDING!
