That's a really good question, Paul. I've changed my mind about this over the years. I used to start with the lowest voice and work my way up. That way, by the time the lead part comes up, you have some support below you.

Recently, I've been playing the lead part first, for the reason you mentioned. Plus if the artist/client is there, sometimes not hearing the top voice first is a bit jarring for them. Those inner parts don't always leave the greatest first impression. If worse comes to worse, you can always re-record the lead part after everything else is down.
