I blew a couple of Calicchios at the NY Brasswind Conference a couple of years ago that seemed to me to "slot" poorly. Someone told me (Claudio Roditi) that that's the way they're designed and that lead players love them for that. At the conference we were hanging out, walking from table to table and came to the Calicchio display. We were handed horns to blow and decided to step into a closet to try two of them. I think Claudio bought his. I didn't.
His comment later? "You need to practice more, Doc."
