| Judging was done on horseback. Trumpeter No. 1 played, and the judges rode until the trumpet was just inaudible. That place was marked, and the procedure was repeated until all trumpeters were finished. (There is some debate as to whether or not a judge by the name of Violis really existed or was a popular legend told amongst trumpeters.) The leather straps were (and are) used to keep cheeks from exploding.
