You can damage the silver plate if you put a LOT of heat on it. A good repairman can do solder work without damaging the silver at all. Really, a good repairman can solder a lacquered horn without damaging the lacquer at all. It is more challenging on a horn with air dry lacquer. If you are having something brazed then it could damage the silver finish.
