To my ears I have lots of trouble telling the difference in sound between different finishes, although some people say they can.

The much bigger difference comes from your choice of model rather than finish. If I'm not mistaken you're looking at a ml (35 in the number) bore trumpet with a gold brass bell and reversed leadpipe (the RG in the model reference). What characteristics are looking for with that choice rather than the standard Xeno..the 8335?
