| Must See DVD - Klimax (from Cuba) My buddy, Steve Eisen, recently loaned me a DVD of a Cuban band called Klimax led by drummer Giraldo Piloto.
This is one of the best bands I've ever heard - period. The horn work is some of the tightest funkiest playing I've ever heard. The precision is amazing. The chops are amazing. The whole band is beyond tight. On top of all of that, the band just exudes joy.
The style is a bizarre mix of Cuban styles, pop, funk, blues, hip hop - an amazing aural stew. The style, I believe, is referred to as timba. It is way too cool.
The instrumentation is as follows: 2 or 3 trumpets, sax, bone, drums, bass, bass, congas, timbales, several voices in the coro and the usual sonero soloist.
On one track Chucho Valdes sits in. The track they do is astonishing - sheer rhythmic beauty and soul.
Klimax! check these guys out. If you like Salsa, you're gonna LOVE this!!! If you love great tight horn sections, these guys will leave your mouth hanging open!
Peace.
