Can we really say that it's in trouble? Isn't it just re-shuffling? It's become clear that the big record companies are always getting bigger and are not interested in selling products that don't yield profits.
But classical music has NEVER been profitable, overall! That doesn't mean there's no market - just that those of us who are interested have to make things happen ourselves. It's sad that the days are gone when artistic quality had something to do with the way record companies do business. But there are actually MORE opportunites on the horizon today for orchestras, soloists, and even brass groups to expand their scope and marketability.
I'm excited to see a company like Arkiv take the initiative to reissue rarities and "niche market" items like the Hakan CD. We trumpeters have buying power - we should encourage Arkiv to re-release all of Hakan's Philips catalog!
