| This is the society that we have created over the last 50-60 years, where the sports heros are gods in our communities and all else is irrelevant. Too many parents see their kid as the next Joe Montana, Michael Jordan, or Emmitt Smith. They plan on living out their dreams through their kids lives, and also getting in on the money when (if) the kid turns pro. Just look at the money and attention thrown at sports from the pee wees on up. How often does a new band shell or concert hall get built? Not nearly as often as the sports upgrades.
Now, I don't feel that sports are bad, in fact I have always enjoyed participating in and watching sports, but our priorities are not were they need to be. It is up to each of us to advocate and stress to the powers that be , that while sports should continue, we need to balance it better with all the other realities of life. |
