If it is reasonably in tune and your seven year old can hold it properly, I see no problem. After your child starts to develop, he/she will want something new and shiny anyway - that can have 1st/3rd and pinky rings or saddles. I started on a Holton Clarke model long cornet (built in the 20s or 30s) with no rings or hooks. I still perform with it from time to time today!
