| I'm going to second the Geoffrey Payne. He really blazes on all cylinders, and I believe, if my sources are correct, he plays the Artunian (and most everything else) on C.
I own the Bibi Black recording, and there's nothing really wrong with it. I recommend that recording because the Pakhumatova and the Vainberg Etudes (I think that's what it's called) are wonderful pieces and it's valuable to have them in print. The Vainberg in particular is an undervalued piece--it is a very witty trip through trumpet orchestral excerpt history, while maintaining a real urgency and never once seeming cheesy for the quotation.
Also, put aside the trumpet playing on the Bibi Black album (though I have no beef with it, I wouldn't pick it over Dok., but then again, that's no reason others shouldn't play it!) for a moment: the orchestral playing is very clean, as is the engineering, perhaps too clear for some tastes. But it's a great recording to learn the orchestral part from because it is quite easy to follow and the parts don't mush together. |
