It dawned on me that I had the Jean-Marie version of the Arban somewhere in that mess I call my library. I went hunting for the book and found it.
I was not surprised to find the absence of metronome markings, not a one for any of the etudes.
I am working on the first and second studies at much more relaxed speeds.
The music has always spoken to me that way.

I raised that question last week, and after several nights of trying to rigidly adhere to the metronome markings, I spoke to my teacher about it, and we decided that Arban probably intended the studies to be much more up to the student's discretion, and I am much happier playing the second study in a more relaxed way.
