| Re: student in need of transcribing advice As a precurser to transcribing solos I think it would be great to follow your band directors advice. Transcribe little melodies wherever you find one you like. You may want to consider Chet Baker solos when you start as well, They tend to be less chromatic than Miles ( even his early work), and the range is usually not an issue with Chet. It honestly doesn's matter who you start with really as long as you sing it so many times you can sing it without the record before you write it down.
MAKE SURE YOU ARE SINGING THE RIGHT PITCHES AND NOT APROXIMATIONS OF WHAT YOU HEAR, THIS IS VERY VERY IMPORTANT.
Other things to consider when transcribing..
1. It's not enough to know the notes and the rhythms - you HAVE to be able to emulate the style of the player you are transcribing. Their sound, articulation, and vibrato are all important factors in really "hearing" their sound.
2. Be able to play it from memory BEFORE you write it down. It does no good to transcribe something you can't play later on without looking at the sheet music you made.
Best wishes on transcribing...it's something we all struggle with when we start off!
Peace
