I was talking to Craig Johnson about this the other day - I certainly do have a break (as do most lead players, I think). And it's changed over the years. When I was about 18, I had a double B & C but no A. Then I had a good A but no Bb or B. Now, I have a good G#, decent A, and virtually zero chance of hitting a Bb or B. I guess it just happens over time.
Certain guys seem to have no break - Roger Ingram, Wayne B., Eric Miyashiro (I'm sure there are many more). Roger told me to play the problem notes very softly, just to hone in their slots. My guess is that would be a good method - it just takes time.
