We talked about that in Baldwin's transcription class. Basically, if the work is copyrighted, you have to get permission from the copyright holder to do anything with it. For example, Ray Vasquez (were you around when he was at the U?) got Gregson's permission to do a brass choir arrangement of his trumpet concerto (and the result was pretty cool).
Now, older stuff that is in the public domain (like early music for example) is fair game for anyone to take up and arrange to your hearts content without getting permission first. Good luck. |
