I know what you mean about "not for the faint of heart" with the mutes. Here is what I do. Same thing laying down the flugel but use a hard piece of foam. Not the "egg crate" kind that people use for beds but something sturdier.

That is also a good idea, but when I need mutes, it means I will need cup, bucket, straight, harmon and plunger with pixie, so I need as much space as I can afford. I figure as long as I don't throw my case around and lie it on the top side, the flugel won't get dented.
